#2901K1 – “THE FIRST AMENDMENT AND BLACK REPORTERS”
Was Judith Miller the first New York Times reporter to be charged for obstructing justice by not relinquishing news sources during the Miller-CIA case? Maybe not. Thirty years ago, Earl Caldwell, then a young, Black New York Times reporter, was a plaintiff in a similar case that reached the Supreme Court and became a legal precedent in the matter of protecting confidential sources. He and former Time magazine columnist Jack White examine the forgotten role of Black journalists in defending freedom of the press.

#2902K1 – “SLAVERY’S BIGGEST SECRET”
Was the first colony to give legal recognition to the institution of slavery a northern or southern state? The answer to that question is one of many surprising facts about the history of slavery in America. Journalist Anne Farrow, co-author of Complicity: How the North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery, exposes the role of the North in the growth of slavery in America.

#2903K1 – “SOUTHERN SLAVERY, NORTHERN LIE?”
The second installation of a two-part series on the North’s hidden history as a slave region, addresses king cotton and the legal and illegal slave trade, among other historic events. Journalist Jenifer Frank, co-author of Complicity: How the North Promoted, Prolonged, and Profited from Slavery, examines the impact of slavery in the development of the nation.

#2904K1 – “ TUSKEGEE AIRMEN: STILL FLYING HIGH”
Still flying high after 60 years, the Tuskegee Airmen and their story stand as one of the most illustrious chapters in American military history. As a testament to this courageous group of patriots, the U. S. Senate recently passed a bill to honor the Tuskegee Airmen with a Congressional Gold Medal.

Who was the real man behind one of Hollywood’s most negative images, Stepin Fetchit? Mel Watkins, author of Who Was Stepin Fetchit?, says that Lincoln Perry was very different from the lazy, bug-eyed buffoon on screen.

#2906K1 – “A PLAN BLACKS COULD USE”
Is there a viable plan to solve the many problems confronting Black America? Dr. John McWhorter, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and author of Winning the Race, believes that Blacks can win against the odds. He also analyses the surprising results of a national poll that ranks the most important Black leaders.

#2907K1 – “THE MICHAEL JACKSON INSIDER”
Numerous books have been written about pop star Michael Jackson. However, the book Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask is significant because it was written by Jackson insider Bob Jones. Jones was Jackson’s public relations chief and confidant for 34 years.

#2908K1 – “DOES CULTURE TRUMP RACE?”
According to scientific studies, all humans are 99.9 percent genetically identical. However, the Atlantic slave trade was based on skin color, which scientists say is determined by only six of 40,000 genes or just one letter of DNA code of 3.1 billion letters in the human genome. In his book Ever Is a Long Time: A Journey into Mississippi’s Dark Past, W. Ralph Eubanks writes that DNA analysis is becoming increasingly popular among people who do genealogical research, particularly among African-Americans who want to identify their tribal roots in Africa. Eubanks talks personally about the social dynamic of race in America.

#2909K1 – “CULTURAL PATTERNS OF GIVING”
Are there different cultural patterns of giving among various ethnic groups in America? According to Dr. Eugene Miller, co-author of Pathways for Change: Philanthropy Among African American, Asian American and Latino Donors in the New York Metropolitan Region, there are differences. He dissects the cultural patterns of giving among these groups.

#2910K1 – “BRANDING SUCCESS”
Entrepreneur Sonya Lowery, author of The Secret Language of Business Cards, has developed several “musts” for developing successful small businesses. In a stimulating and informative conversation, she explains the formula for branding success.

#2911K1 – “JUSTICE DELAYED”
Harry T. Moore, who was at the vanguard of the civil rights movement in Florida, and his wife Harriet were killed when their home was firebombed in 1951. Harry Moore became the first NAACP official to be assassinated during the civil rights era. His daughter Evangeline Moore tells a chilling story of her parents’ death and her struggle to memorialize their sacrifice and bring their killer(s) to justice.

-- “NATIONAL TEACHER OF THE YEAR”
America has traditionally relied on families and day care to prepare students for school. Unfortunately, this theory is being increasingly challenged because of the large number of students who enter school lacking oral language skills, book skills and any knowledge of the alphabet.  Kimberly Oliver, an elementary school teacher in Silver Spring, Md., won the National Teacher of the Year award because she helped turn around an underperforming school that suffers from this societal breakdown.

#2913K1-- “YOUNG BLACK MEN: A PROBLEM THAT IS IGNORED”
The already dire situation of young Black men in the US has worsened. A study found that employment and education statistics have gotten even worse, despite improvements in the economy. A huge pool of poorly educated Black men looms as a social and economic fact in America’s present and future.

#2914K1 – WHAT IS THE PROBLEM BETWEEN BLACKS AND THE GOP?

The New York Times, in a 6-column headline, concluded that the Republican Party’s efforts to attract more Black votes had come up short.  What is it that prevents the Republican Party from attracting a large Black bloc vote?  Joseph Watkins, a member of the Republican National Committee’s African American Advisory Board, gives his take on the issue and offers some solutions.

#2915K1 – STRAIGHT UP ON THE DOWN LOW

In a new book called “Straight Up,” Michael Stevens, Sr., a Black preacher, takes a hard line stance on what has come to be known as the down-low phenomenon: Black men in a secret society who have sex with other men, but deny they are homosexual.  Stevens feels that the leadership of the Black church and the Black family are now in danger because of homosexuality.

#2916K1 – THE SECRET OF A LIFETIME

June Cross is a tenured professor of journalism at Columbia University and author of Secret Daughter: A Mixed Race Daughter and the Mother Who Gave Her Away.  She unfolds the painful but challenging story of having a White mother who was confronted with racial pressure that impacted her parental decisions.  It turned out to be a big factor in the way June Cross grew up in what she calls a perilous childhood.

#2917 – THE MAN WHO IS BLACK AND WHITE -- NOT HALF WHITE

If anyone just happens to be Black and White, it’s Dr. Gregory H. Williams.   Dr.  Williams is president of The City College of New York and author of “Life on the Color Line: The True Story of a White Boy Who Discovered He Was Black.”

#2918 – “A TALK WITH A BRILLIANT MIND

While soaring professionally, pioneering journalist and author Barbara Reynolds almost drowned in a private hell of the demons from her past -- abandonment by her mother, incest, longing for the children she did not bear, job discrimination and a bad marriage that ended with the murder of the other woman.  That’s what her new book, Out of Hell, Living Well: Healing From the Inside Out, is all about.

Dr. Ronald Stephens, author of Idlewild: Black Eden of Michigan and John O. Meeks, an Idlewild entrepreneur, explore Idlewild’s history as an intellectual and recreational haven for African-American families.   

#2920 – “ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND ECONOMIC FACTS”

Dr. William Spriggs, Chair of the Department of Economics at Howard University discusses his paper entitled “Immigration and Equity: A Dialogue to Help Shape the Issues of this Important Challenge.”   

#2921 --  “THE MLK DREAM YOU CAN SEE”

The legacy of civil rights activist Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. is indelibly etched in the fabric of American history. Harry Johnson, president of the Washington, D.C. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc., is helping to shape the vision of a memorial that would capture the essence of Dr. King’s universal message of equality and freedom.

#2922K1 – “NEW ENERGY AT THE CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS”
    
Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-SC), House Democratic Caucus Chairman, discusses the Congressional Black Caucus’ plans to focus a good portion of its agenda on energy and increased fuel production in America.


#2923K1 – “IS THE FAITH-BASED INITIATIVE WORKING?”

Dr. David Bositis, senior political analyst at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, examines the startling results of a survey gauging the participation of Black churches in the Bush administration’s faith-based initiative.

#2924K1 – “TAKING BLAME FOR THE SHAME”

Is the poor self-image of many Blacks self-inflicted or is it the result of some insidious outside force?  Pultizer Prize-winning writer Leonard Pitts, Jr., who is a syndicated columnist for the Miami Herald and author of “Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood,” tackles the problem of low self esteem among Black Americans.

Dr. Obery Hendricks, Jr., a professor of Biblical Interpretation at the New York Theological Seminary, discusses his book, “The Politics of Jesus,” and provides a more radical interpretation of Jesus’ teachings.

#2926K1 – “AN A+ PRINCIPAL”

The nation’s school dropout crisis, especially among Black, urban and low-income students, has been dealt a setback at the
Baltimore Talent Development High School. Principal Jeffrey Robinson talks about how hard work and innovation created a miracle.
